Is Your TV and Console Ready for GTA 6?

Nobody outside Rockstar knows. Rockstar has confirmed the release date and that the game launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — it has not announced graphics modes, frame-rate targets or output resolutions on any platform. Pages listing a "Fidelity Mode" and a "Performance Mode" with specific numbers are inventing them.

What you can control is whether your display accepts everything your console is able to send. Both console families can output 4K, HDR, VRR and 120 Hz today. If your chain is limited to HDMI 2.0, you are capped at 18 Gbps regardless of what the game turns out to do.

The PS5 Pro has a more powerful GPU and hardware-accelerated PSSR upscaling, so in games that support it, it generally holds higher resolutions and steadier frame pacing than the base PS5. Whether GTA 6 has a Pro-enhanced mode has not been announced.

Practical read: if you already own a base PS5, there is no confirmed GTA 6 reason to upgrade. If you are buying a console anyway, the Pro is the stronger hardware. Note it ships without a disc drive.

Rockstar has confirmed the game launches on Xbox Series X|S, which includes the Series S — so it will run. No Series S-specific resolution, frame rate or feature set has been announced, and the install size has not been published either.

The Series S ships with roughly 364 GB of usable storage, which is a documented hardware fact. Whether GTA 6 alone strains that is unknown, but storage expansion is a reasonable thing to plan for on a Series S regardless of any single game.

You need HDMI 2.1 to receive 4K at 120 Hz and HDMI Forum VRR from a PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X. HDMI 2.0 maxes out at 18 Gbps, which covers 4K 60 Hz with HDR but not the higher-refresh modes. That is a specification fact about the connection, independent of any game.

The cable matters too. Look for the Ultra High Speed HDMI certification logo (48 Gbps). The cable in your console box already meets it, so start there before buying anything.

For desk play, a 27" 1440p OLED at high refresh with HDMI 2.1 is the enthusiast pick; the LG UltraGear 27GR95QE-B is a well-regarded example. If you sit further back, a 32" 4K 144 Hz IPS panel such as the Gigabyte M28U usually delivers better perceived sharpness for the money.

Avoid 4K 60 Hz "gaming" monitors on a current console — they cannot accept the 120 Hz output the hardware supports.

OLED dominates the category: the LG C4, Sony A95L and Samsung S90D all accept 4K 120 Hz over HDMI 2.1 with very low input lag in Game Mode and per-pixel contrast that suits dark, neon-lit scenes. QD-OLED panels such as the S90D push the brightest highlights.

If OLED is out of budget, the Hisense U8N (Mini-LED) is the strongest LED-LCD alternative for HDR brightness.

Yes — PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S all support VRR at the system level, and it helps in any game whose frame rate fluctuates. Whether GTA 6 supports VRR specifically has not been announced.

To use it, your display must support HDMI Forum VRR, not just AMD FreeSync over HDMI 2.0. Most HDMI 2.1 OLEDs from 2022 onward qualify; check your TV's spec sheet rather than the box.

Rockstar has not published a GTA 6 install size, and we are not going to guess one. For context, GTA V's current-gen install is around 105 GB, and large modern open-world titles commonly land between 100 GB and 150 GB before patches.

The documented facts are the console capacities: roughly 364 GB usable on a Series S and roughly 667 GB on a base PS5. If you keep several modern titles installed, expansion storage is worth planning for regardless of any single release.

In games that offer it, ray-traced reflections make the biggest visible difference in interiors and night scenes — wet asphalt under streetlights, mirrors, chrome — and much less difference during fast driving, where reflective surfaces move too quickly to register. Whether GTA 6 uses ray tracing has not been announced.

Sony has historically not revised its mid-generation Pro consoles for several years after launch, so waiting is a long bet with no announced end date. If you want to play on day one, buying the current hardware plus a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is the lower-risk path — displays can be upgraded later, and OLED prices keep falling.

Two upgrades are widely rated: the DualSense Edge, whose hair-trigger stops shorten trigger travel for driving and whose back paddles free your right thumb for camera control, and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable such as the Zeskit Maya if you have misplaced the one from the box. Both outlast a console generation.

On PS5 / PS5 Pro: Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output, set Resolution to 2160p, enable 4K Video Transfer Rate, and check the Information sub-menu for 4K 120 Hz. On Xbox Series X: Settings → General → TV & display options → 4K TV details reports exactly what has been negotiated.
